When looking at technology adoption, the standard curve is almost always put forward as the model of what is going to happen in the marketplace. And somewhat reasonably, it is a predictor of market behavior; with identification of innovators, early adopters, etc. For reference see the graph below.
The two curves illustrate the adoption rate and the total market penetration (i.e. the integral of the adoption rate). This model really has served us well and deals with the general case exceptionally accurately. Experience has shown that a smoothly sloped curve of adoption is not always what happens. The acceleration of changes in technology for the digital world, including mobility and security, has greatly increased in a very short time period and the acceleration has given a lot of power to the consumer.
Up to this point in the BPMS ecosystem, we have been in transition between the early adopters and the majority, and now we are seeing an accelerating transition to the early majority phase. This is excellent for the customer base and for those that are evaluating Pega 7 for their BPMS platforms. HTML 5 for example, is now not just seen as a nice to have for the future, but seen today as a must have in order to compete in the digital world. Browser standards are the most recent example of this acceleration of change and is going to compress the timeline for the adoption curve and in doing so, will put great pressure on organizations to upgrade their platforms and become more agile with their applications.
At PegaWORLD 2015, which is around the corner, it will be exciting to see and hear about the organizations that are leveraging Pega 7 to re-platform their businesses processes on technology that enables them to operate in the new digital business world. The ability to encapsulate business capabilities and deliver customized services anytime and anywhere. It is this type of a technical platform that is allowing organizations, as Geoffrey Moore has coined it, to cross the chasm. Organizations can more easily leverage technology and accelerate their journey to a digital organization.
For some, the key question is how to get onto Pega 7 from an existing version of PRPC and how best to architect once on Pega 7.
